At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck ears of grain and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.”

Have You Missed the Point?
So what is Jesus saying to the Pharisees? He's saying, guys, you're missing the point, you know? You've been distracted from the heart of the matter. Happens to us all. Happens to us in our exploration of the faith. It happens to us in our exploration of the gospel. And it happens to us in our lives. We get distracted from the main thing. We get distracted from the heart of the matter. You know, and then we get caught up in these other things.
Sometimes people will come to me, and they'll be like, well, what do you think about this, or what do you think about that, or this shouldn't be happening. Or what I like to do is I like to do this exercise, and I say to the person, okay, what's the most important thing about our faith? Okay, put that in the middle, think of that as a bullseye. And now draw concentric circles around the bullseye. And how many circles do you have to go out before you get to whatever it is this thing that you think should be done or shouldn't be done or isn't being done well or should be done differently? How many circles do you have to go before, and of course the realization, every time is many, many, many circles away from the heart of the matter. What Jesus is constantly trying to do in the Gospels is keep us focused on the heart of the matter. And he is the heart of the matter.
And this is exactly what he's saying in the Gospel today. The Pharisees are like your disciples, they're off picking the grain. And they're breaking the rules, and Jesus is like, guys lock in. I'm right here. I am the heart of the matter, way truth life. Be distracted by that stuff as you go out into the world today, keep that in mind: the heart of the matter. Don't let the other stuff distract you. You. Have a great day, and remember, don't just be yourself, be the very best version of yourself, all that God created you to be.
