Gospel

Lk 6:36-38

Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back.

An Overflowing Return

Hi, I'm Matthew Kelly. Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where we're exploring the genius of the gospel. Remember each day we're looking for a word or a phrase or an idea to allow us to focus and apply that day's gospel to our lives as we move through our day. Today's reading is from the Gospel of Luke 6:36-38. Judge not and you will not be judged. Condemn not and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over will be put in your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back. It's a short reading, but there's so much here, right? You've got the judge, you've got the forgive, you've got the give, three enormous issues in the human experience. I'm going to focus on the-- I'm going to focus on the give because we think sometimes about inputs and we don't always think about outputs or outcomes. In this case, Jesus is describing inputs and outcomes. And the outcome he describes is it will be given to you in good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put in your lap. And that's the response, he says, to giving. That's the reaction to giving. That's the cause and effect relationship to giving. And we talk a lot about giving. We talk a lot about generosity. But the reality is, is that if you're looking for mission in your life, if you're looking for a sense of meaning and purpose in your life, start giving. It doesn't mean you have to give stuff. It doesn't mean you have to give money. You can give compliments. You can teach someone how to do something. You can give a book to someone that you finished reading. You can give someone a smile. You can give to people in so many different ways. But the reality is, is we do want the overflowing return. We want the overflowing return. Running over, Jesus says. But in order to get the overflowing return, we have to give. And so find beautiful ways to give, find creative ways to give, and make it a mission to give in some way every single day for the rest of your life. God bless you. Have an amazing day. Don't just be yourself. Be the very best version of yourself, all that God created you to be.
