Enter God's Cathedral

Welcome back to Radical and Relevant, where we're exploring the genius of the Daily Gospel. Take it a few minutes to look for a word or a phrase or an idea in the gospel that jumps out at us. We allow God to speak to us just through that word, phrase or idea. Today's gospel reading is from Mark 9:2-10.

And after six days, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his garments became glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking to Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is well that we are here with you. Let us make three booths, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." For he did not know what to say, for they were exceedingly afraid. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud. "This is my beloved son. Listen to him." And suddenly looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them, but Jesus only. And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man should have risen from the dead. So they kept the matters to themselves, questioning what the rising from the dead meant.

I jumped out at you today. I jumped out at me. Probably didn't jump out at anybody else, but they went up on this mountain, okay? And they're in nature. And so many of the great, profound spiritual experiences that we read about in the Gospels, so many of the great, profound spiritual experiences in history happen out in nature. When was the last time you spent some time in nature? We do live in concrete kingdoms very often in our cities, in our suburbs. When's the last time you felt earth under your feet? And how is God calling you to go out into nature, to reconnect with nature, His creation, His gift to us. His genius in nature, so many lessons to be learned in nature, so many profound spiritual experiences happen out in nature. Maybe it's very cold at the moment, don't want to go outside in the nature. Maybe you certainly don't want to get your feet in the snow, bare feet in the snow. But let's make some plans to spend some time in nature, in God's cathedral, God's beautiful creation.
