Gospel

Lk 11:29-32

When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nin´eveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nin´eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

Pray Like This

Welcome back to Radical & Relevant, where we're exploring the genius of Jesus, his life, his teachings in the Gospels. Today's reading is from Luke 11:29-32.

"When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, 'This generation is an evil generation. It seeks a sign. But no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah, for as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. The Queen of the South will arise at the Judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will arise at the Judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here."

Phrase that jumps out at me today is right at the beginning of the reading: this generation. What is this generation like? What is our generation like? And why is it important to reflect upon that? Because if you hang out with a bunch of people who are lukewarm, who are not that interested in growing, who are not that interested in their spiritual development, it's easy to feel like you're further down the path. Maybe we're hanging out with a whole generation of people who aren't that interested in the path. And so we could just be two or three steps down the path and our ego can congratulate ourselves and tell us we're doing great, but only because we're comparing ourselves to the people around us, this generation.

What is this generation like? And how is God calling us to rise above the average? How is God calling us to rise above the norms of this generation? Which I think most of us upon reflection will agree is, at the very least, struggling to understand God, to make a place, a space for God, religion, and spirituality in their lives. God bless you. Have a great day. And remember, be bold, be Catholic
